Nîmes, little Rome
The arena of Nîmes, among the best preserved of the Empire, still hosts concerts, férias and great occasions. The Maison Carrée, a Roman temple intact in the heart of the town, impresses by its purity. A date happily starts on the Esplanade, carries on through the lanes of the Écusson and ends in the Fountain Gardens, in the cool shade of Mount Cavalier and its century-old pines.
The Pont du Gard
Half an hour from Nîmes, the Pont du Gard spans the Gardon with three tiers of honey-stone arches. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this Roman aqueduct nearly fifty metres high can be explored from the banks, where many spread a towel for a summer swim. A date at the foot of the structure, then a picnic under the holm oaks, builds a simple and lasting memory.
Uzès, Aigues-Mortes and countryside
Uzès, the first duchy of France, lines up its mansions around the arcaded Place aux Herbes: a market on Saturday morning, a coffee in the shade of a plane tree, and the date is a success. Further south, Aigues-Mortes raises its medieval walls above the pink salt marshes. On Lyad, locals share their villages; it is up to you to find someone to drive the small roads with.
